An Overview of Hair Transplants

A hair transplant is a surgical procedure that involves moving hair to the balding or thinning parts of one’s scalp. While hair transplants are often the last resort for individuals who have likely experimented with a broad range of other treatments, their proven success rate has given hope to many individuals wanting to gain back confidence that was stripped away from them.

What Is Done During a Hair Transplant?

During a hair transplant, small pieces of skin are taken from areas of the body that have healthy hair growth. In most cases, the back of the scalp offers the best conditions for this, as hair tends to be at its thickest here. These pieces of skin are surgically moved to the area of the scalp that is bald or producing extremely thin hair. After the hair transplant has been completed and the scalp has fully healed, patients should expect hair growth to continue.

Although this is the standard method for performing a hair transplant, there are a few different approaches that can be taken during the procedure. These options include the previously mentioned method of grafting, scalp reduction, flap surgery and tissue expansion.

Are There Risks Or Side Effects?

Any surgery poses certain risks or side effects. With hair transplants, there is always the risk of failed grafts and scarring, although the majority of hair transplants have delivered hopeful results for patients. Alongside these risks, there is the possibility for infection, excessive blood loss, a loss of feeling to the scalp, or even an allergic reaction to the anaesthesia. However, these risks are very rare.

When it comes to side effects, patients need not worry too much. Although it is normal to face some side effects in the aftermath of a hair transplant, these conditions are short-term. Patients may experience scabs, itching, swelling, a tight feeling, short-term numbness, or slight pain as an immediate byproduct of the surgery. Again, these are all normal symptoms to feel and should not be expected to last very long.

Why Should Someone Get a Hair Transplant?

In order to be eligible for this surgery, one must show a history of other treatments. Oftentimes, hair transplant patients suffer from medical conditions like alopecia or thyroid diseases. Although, some inquire about this surgery after losing hair due to a traumatic injury. For these individuals, a hair transplant is a miracle in and of itself. After their procedure, they will have a fully restored head of hair, newfound confidence and a solution to a health issue they were told would be permanent.
