Just over five years ago, I recorded a video post on Facebook that highlighted a challenge that I took on called the “Medium-Soft” experiment.
For 30 days, I put myself through the test of not swearing, cursing, using expletives, experiencing road rage, getting hotheaded, losing my sh*t…you get the idea.
Did it work?
Yes.
Was it hard?
Oh, yes.
Would I do it again?
Heck, yes.
I wondered over five years ago, if I could really succeed at this challenge—because what it entailed was difficult to master. Sure, one would have to allow for muck-ups, slip-ups, and colossal errors—but, 30 days of this? No swearing at all? Not even a little bit?
I actually posted a before and after video of my findings and testimonials.
And I discovered so much about myself during this lengthy and difficult experiment:
1. Patience will get you far.
I’m probably the most patient I’ve ever been in my life, but this challenge really threw me for a loop, in a great way. I learned how to take any sticky situation and slowly peel myself out of it, without judgement. When you are kinder to yourself, the body responds to you in kind, as well.
2. Words uttered out loud cannot be taken back.
You can apologize for your mistakes, but I urge you to be mindful of your tones and affect as they may potentially offend others.
3. Think twice before reacting.
There’s no sense in raising your heart rate or causing a catastrophic series of reactions in your body.
This one takes so much practice and patience. Please, don’t let your stress levels become so escalated that you cause yourself potential harm. No one and nothing is worth losing your health. Keep this in mind, every single day of your life.
4. Try to replace classics like “f*ck” and “sh*t” with other fun and fancy expressions.
It feels good to swear, doesn’t it? But we can stop doing it.
I absolutely adore British comedy—and we can all take a lesson from some of their brilliant ways of cursing. My favorites are “get stuffed,” “go bat your earhole,” and “shut your cake hole.”
Yeah I know, they sure don’t match the intensity and fervor of the tried-and-true “f*ck you” and “shove it up your ass.”
But, hey, this is the “medium-soft” experiment! We have to shift gears.
5. You will undoubtedly become more grounded, self-aware, and calmer as a result of trying this challenge for 30 straight days.
I saved the absolute best point for last—and if I may attest, this challenge was a game-changer for me, personally.
Do I sometimes curse like a trucker? You betcha.
Do I enjoy sounding like a “rough-around-the-edges” kind of gal on occasion? You’d betta believe!
Trust me: if you try this challenge for a whole month, you will come out of it with a newfound sense of self. You will have the ability to marvel at your progress, increase your feelings of self-worth, and see how truly valuable your place is on Earth.
If you’re someone who slowly wants to transform into a stunning peacock, take this test.
So be a “medium-soft” game player—and watch your world slowly and magically morph in front of your very eyes.
Let me know if you’re going to take the plunge and try out the “medium-soft” experiment.
I’d absolutely love to hear how it went for you.
Love, light, peace, and good vibes to all of you!
