As a ritual, at New York Art Life, we’re always excited to feature artists who are changing the game of the art scene. New York-Based visual effects artist Angelina Vania Hadiputri is the next artist who has captured our attention. Angelina has been working as a compositor in episodic television projects for three years. Her passion for the experience of compositing is very deep and goes back to her early days of learning and working on projects both big and small that have brought her to New York, the heart of major television productions.
Angelina Hadiputri embarked on the compositing journey working for the School of Visual Arts Computer Art Department. The role challenged many skills that later became essential to her work, most of which required the advanced use of computers and computer programs. By helping students with technical problems, checking the equipment, and being an asset to the lab, Angelina readied herself for her work as a Compositing intern at Nice Shoes. She worked there for a few months by stepping up her career skills. There, she worked with the VFX Supervisor and the head of CG for commercial projects. This was a significant step in laying the groundwork for her future.
Although compositing is not the first thing that comes to mind when speaking about film and television, it holds together some of the most important moments that are essential to the film and story, yet difficult to capture in real life. It is beneficial to learn about the composting process to gain knowledge of the film industry and to enjoy TV and film with a better understanding of the filmmaking process.
Angelina’s work as a compositor then began to evolve with Ingenuity Studios where she was involved in two-dimensional compositional work including many episodic TV and film projects. Her responsibilities include Roto, Paint, Clean-Up, Beauty, Split Screen, Keying, Color correction, and Screen Replacement. Angelina is so passionate about the film world and the details that contribute to fine films. But her passion is so vast and broad that she can apply her skills to a wide variety of projects. In her time at Ingenuity Studios, she worked closely on projects that had high popularity and support from film lovers. Among those projects were A Million Little Things Season 2, High Fidelity Season 1, Jim Beam Commercial, The Good Fight Season 4, The Walking Dead: World Beyond, The Secrets We Keep, and Filthy Rich. It is important to note how different each of these projects is and therefore, how broad Angelina’s skill and craft is in being able to apply the vision of a compositor to each project.
Angelina’s work has taken her far with upcoming projects and opportunities that give her more exposure to the film world, especially projects that become more and more complex and in need of detailed VFX and CG work. In her career, she has been able to land other projects that included the scope of large-scale project works, in which she performed different roles in the compositing department.
Due to being based in New York City, Angelina has been able to hone her compositing skills in different directions, and various responsibilities that are specific yet essential to every compositor. For instance, there are many programs that a compositor must have proficient fluency in, such as The Foundry’s Nuke, PFTrack, Mocha Pro, Autodesk Maya, Solid Angle, Arnold, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe After Effects, and Adobe Premiere: All of which Angelina knows well and uses in her work.
These tools and programs were very useful and important to her work in her main projects that took place in 2018 and 2019. The first project was the NYU Graduate Thesis Film “Potion Masters” where she was responsible for Green Screen Compositing in Nuke. After that, she utilized Nuke for Rotoscoping in the VFX Film “Swift.” That was a very successful year before entering Ingenuity Studios and continuing her individual projects the year after. After “Swift,” she worked on a CG Thesis Film called “Unsurpassed Team” where she again utilized the program Nuke for CG Compositing. This became one of the highlights of her career as she then continued working with CG Compositing with Nuke in her next project “Butera” which was also a CG T Film. The last of her projects was the VFX Film “Game On” where she collaborated with Amy Tang. There, she acted as director and had the opportunity to work with Lookdev, Lighting, and Compositing all in one project. Angelina Hadiputri has truly proven herself as a professional and inspiring compositor with determination and continuous hard work. She is currently gearing up for the next project in compositing.
