Overcoming Artist’s Block

On some days, you might feel like an artist. You have no idea what to paint on other days, and you’re not motivated to create anything new. This is what many refer to as “artist’s block.” It can be a frustrating and challenging thing to go through.

However, all hope is not lost. There are many ways to get your creative juices flowing again. Whether your block is due to self-doubt, fear of criticism, lack of skills, or exhaustion, follow some tips below to get motivated again.

Remind Yourself it Won’t Last Forever.

It’s okay to be frustrated or blocked when you’re not 100% on top of your game. Take some deep breaths and figure out where the blocks are coming from. The biggest thing to do is not feel guilty about having these feelings. Accept them and know that they will go away.

Give Yourself a Break

Sometimes, just a few days of inactivity can help recharge your batteries. Check to see if that break is helping or hindering your creativity. If you’re a professional artist, taking a break isn’t always an option. However, it is still essential to find a little time for a break. Do some other activities for a while to recharge. Consider taking a nap, watching television, stretching, or walking around the block.

Change Your Creative Space

When you get blocked in your work, consider changing your creative space. Usually, a simple change of scenery can help. Go to a café, get brighter light bulbs or move your furniture in your home. Changing your environment can stimulate your brain to think differently. It can also help connect ideas and produce new ones.

Socialize With Friends and Family

Being surrounded by people who care about you can help lower your cortisol levels linked to chronic stress. Bouncing ideas from friends or family can also help you break free from your creative rut.

Getting in touch with someone face to face can help you get back on track. Having a good time with your pets can also have health benefits. It releases two feel-good hormones, serotonin, and oxytocin.

Take a Long Walk

Another way to overcome your block is to take a long walk. Try going to a nature area you have never been to before or taking a different route to your frequent store. Being in new surroundings can help boost creativity and mood.
