3 Tips For Making Your Wardrobe More Sustainable

Sustainability is a huge trend currently, but it is a needed trend that needs to stick. More people than ever are trying to be more conscious of their buying habits and also what they do with their lifestyle. Most people want to live more sustainably, but when it comes to clothing, people are a little fussier. People prefer new over used, so if this is you, ensure new clothes are of premium quality. There are some simple steps on how you can become more sustainable. In this article, we will go through some different ways in which you can be more sustainable in 2023.

Buy Quality, Not Quantity

We have all heard that quality isn’t cheap, and you definitely get what you pay for when it comes to clothing. The high price tag of some premium items can definitely be off-putting when you are starting your more sustainable journey. It’s all too easy to compare the higher quality to your favourite high street store and just look at the price. Yes, it will be half the price, but it also won’t last anywhere near as long as the more expensive alternative. Bearing this in mind when you get nervous about the price will make it that little bit easier to part with your money.

Invest In Timeless Design

Trends come and go and it’s all too tempting to go down the high street and pick up some trending items for cheap. This is not the way to go, especially if your fashion focused. If you love fashion, then timeless classics are what you should be looking for. Trending items will be out of season just as fast as you buy the product, so what’s the point? Your only going to look ridiculous when it’s not trending anymore.

Timeless designs are smarter and it’s a more sustainable method of shopping. A good test is to look at the item, think about the product and ask yourself, will you wear it more than 30 times? If it’s a no, then don’t buy. For example, a luxury hoodie will ensure you are warm and stylish for many outfits, but if you are looking at a gimmick tee, you certainly wouldn’t be wearing this out anytime soon.

Wash your clothes less and with low temperatures

Obviously not washing your clothes sounds disgusting, but not everything needs cleaning after one wear. Of course tees, underwear and socks all need to be washed every time, but other layers such as jumpers, hoodies, jeans, cargo and everything else do not need cleaning after one use. Instead, you can air them out, spray them with a fabric cleaner and put them back away in your wardrobe. By doing this, you are keeping the fibres intact which in turn reduces wear and tear.

When you do come to wash your clothes, ensure that you wash at a cold temperature. Hot water destroys clothing fibres and ends their life after just a couple of washes. By washing on cold, you are not only saving energy, but you are also protecting your clothes and extending their life which is important when you buy quality over quantity.
