“Habits are the compound interest of self-improvement.” It’s the quote I like most from the book Atomic Habits by James Clear. It sends a clear message that small changes could add up to create extraordinary results.
And writing is one of the habits like that since it changed my life significantly.
In recent years, all I wrote were short statuses I posted on my Facebook. Until a few months ago, I still assumed I didn’t know to write, and I also didn’t dare to write anything.
One day in December, I joined a Books Reading Class. The teacher of this course encouraged me to write a daily journal. It is a diary to record experiences in life and analyze and evaluate them. He told me that maintaining a journal was one of the best personal growth methods I have ever known.
I started my journals three months ago. I also learned writing skills because I want to share my knowledge about self-development with people around me and motivate them.
Now, the results were the same as what my teacher said; writing brought me many great things.
I live more disciplined, following the timeline to read and write every day. I also became a positive-thinking person, and I found what I wanted to do because I understood myself. My language ability has improved after three months of practicing.
Thanks to writing every day, I learned some methods that could help me in self-development and many good ideas to apply in future businesses and reflections.
Therefore, I want to encourage you to practice writing every day.
- To save inspiring and surprising ideas
Writing is one of the great ways to save curious ideas.
People tend to forget what they learn or read after some time. Research has found that approximately 56% of information is forgotten within an hour, 66% after a day, and 75% after six days. Writing down the ideas help me remember them over a long time.
In addition, I record vital information to review in the future. Thanks to reading books every day, I have many exciting things in my notebook. They will be beneficial to me for further thoughts. I could also apply them to change my life and share them with people around me.
- To improve language ability
As a writer, I must read a lot to enhance my level and diversify my output. No matter the level of competency, there’s always room for improvement.
When making my composition more precise, my vocabulary and grammar progressed automatically. I found that more words and phrases commended themselves for my writing. As a result, the quality of my composition is increasing daily.
My capacity to express my opinion after practicing has been improving daily. Before, it’s is hard for me to present an idea concisely and clearly. But now, it is not a problem.
If you want to improve your English, I recommend you write in English daily. The result will be the same as the language progress. You will be more fluent and confident in English communication.
- To have a one-one conversation with yourself
People spend time communicating with and understanding many other people around them. But sometimes they even don’t understand themselves. This is why I encourage you to write because it will allow you to have a one-one conversation with yourself.
I often write down my thoughts and anxiety before bed or whenever I want. This is very useful for relaxing and calming my mind and makes me so comfortable and easy to sleep.
After keeping this activity for three months, I am becoming a clear thinker and living more intentionally. I understand myself more than ever. I know what I like, what I am scared about, and what I want to do by asking myself questions.
You can choose a daily journal to record your thoughts on important issues and lessons from experience. It is an outlet and an excellent method for self-reflection. Once you understand yourself, you will realize what is vital for your personal development and spiritual life.
- To build up my discipline
To become an excellent writer, I must try hard and keep writing daily. But creating a habit is very hard and tedium. Repeating one activity day by day and the lack of ideas sometimes made me discouraged. And I wanted to give up. At that time, I had to motivate myself to follow the schedule and find inspiration from people I admired.
I managed to write anything for almost days in the last three months. Besides writing, I create habits of reading books, waking up early, and doing Yoga.
“The professionals stick to the schedule while the amateurs let life get in the way.” This quote from Atomic Habits gives me an insight into building discipline to become a professional writer. You should determine your purpose and do anything to reach it. Finally, you will become more persistent.
- To make money
I take advantage of writing to build up my brand and also develop my career.
There are many chances to earn money from writing. I know many bloggers have made tons of money from putting ads on their websites and collecting revenue from each click. The more traffic their sites have, the more money they can earn.
The other way to make money from writing is through freelance jobs. Companies that provide products and services pay a lot of money to hire a freelance writer for their marketing campaign.
Therefore, a solopreneur could earn thousands of dollars monthly by writing advertisement articles. So, as we can see, writing could bring up economic benefits.
Even if you are not a professional writer, you still could gain many benefits from writing activities. So, start writing everything you want today to complete yourself and become a better individual.
