I don’t always remember blissful moments.
I even find it hard to remember the days when I was on cloud nine or did things which I never thought would be possible for me to do.
But I always remember moments of separation. Believe it or not, I may not recall how a friendship or a relationship had started, but the moment it ended is something that’s forever engraved in my memory.
I may not be the only one who thinks that moments of separation are fueled by so much sadness and grief. They’re a collection of seconds and minutes that feel like hours and days and later turn into years and decades that aren’t easily erased from our hearts.
Perhaps it’s not the breakup or separation that hurts the most. It’s that one minute in time when you have realized that things will never be the same ever again. It’s that one minute that you can’t get over.
Although healing is inevitable and moving on is on the horizon, the pain of separation changes us forever.
And even though the intensity of our sorrow dissipates and that one minute in time slowly becomes distorted in our minds, the wound in our hearts remains the same.
These nine quotes are for anyone who has been through the messiness of breakups:
“That’s the brutality of a breakup, isn’t it? The people leaving think they did everything possible, the people left behind think what is possible hasn’t even been tested yet.” ~ Laura Dave
“It was such a weird thing how a breakup stretched much wider than you expected. You didn’t just lose a person, but their entire world as well.” ~ Sarah Dessen
“In a separation it is the one who is not really in love who says the more tender things.” ~ Marcel Proust
“Because you can never go from going out to being friends, just like that. It’s a lie. It’s just something that people say they’ll do to take the permanence out of a breakup. And someone always takes it to mean more than it does, and then is hurt even more when, inevitably, said ‘friendly’ relationship is still a major step down from the previous relationship, and it’s like breaking up all over again. But messier.” ~ Sarah Dessen
“And when your sorrow is comforted (time soothes all sorrows) you will be content that you have known me.” ~
“And ever has it been that love knows not its own depth until the hour of separation.” ~ Kahlil Gibran
“In every friendship hearts grow and entwine themselves together, so that the two hearts seem to make only one heart with only a common thought. That is why separation is so painful; it is not so much two hearts separating, but one being torn asunder.” ~ Fulton J. Sheen
“You fell in love with a storm. Did you really think you would get out unscathed?” ~
“Isn’t it funny how the memories you cherish before a breakup can become your worst enemies afterwards? The thoughts you loved to think about, the memories you wanted to hold up to the light and view from every angle—it suddenly seems a lot safer to lock them in a box, far from the light of day and throw away the key.” ~ Allyson Braithwaite Condie
