From Skeptic to Spiritual: How I Found Balance & Meaning in Life.

Being rational and spiritual might seem like opposing viewpoints, but in reality, they can complement each other quite well.

Striving to be rational does not necessarily mean that you cannot have a spiritual side, and vice versa. In fact, being rational can help you to approach spirituality in a more logical and methodical way, without the need to suspend disbelief or believe in things that are not provable.

Personal experience has shown that it is possible to live a spiritual life while still remaining grounded in rationality.

For a long time, I struggled to reconcile these seemingly opposing views. As someone who has always valued logic and reason, I found it difficult to accept things that I couldn’t prove or see for myself.

At the same time, I felt a strong pull toward spirituality and the idea that there was something more significant than what we can see with our physical eyes. However, over time, I learned that being spiritual did not necessarily mean that I had to abandon my rational side.

In fact, I realized that being rational could help me to approach spirituality in a more grounded and logical way.

Here are eight tips on how to be rational and spiritual at the same time:

1. Keep an Open Mind.

One of the essential elements of balancing spirituality and rationality together is to keep an open mind. I had to learn this the hard way because I initially believed that the spiritual world was just a realm of magical thinking and baseless beliefs.

It wasn’t until I opened my mind to new ideas and concepts that I began to see the value in spirituality.

Keeping an open mind allows you to explore new ideas and concepts that you may have dismissed previously and gives you the opportunity to approach spirituality in a more logical and rational way.

2. Be Curious.

Curiosity is a valuable tool in balancing spirituality and rationality. It’s important to remain curious about different aspects of spirituality and how they intersect with rational thinking. By staying curious, we can continue to learn and grow in our understanding of the world around us.

I found that my curiosity was piqued when I began to explore different spiritual practices and beliefs. This led me to a deeper understanding of myself and the world around me.

3. Use Critical Thinking.

Using critical thinking is a vital tool to approach spirituality in a more rational way. Like many others, I believed that spirituality was synonymous with blind faith and superstition. However, critical thinking helped me to question assumptions, look for evidence, and analyze information carefully before coming to a conclusion.

This skill enabled me to avoid blindly accepting ideas that lacked evidence and instead focus on concepts that had a solid foundation.

4. Seek Out Evidence.

It’s easy to dismiss spirituality and mysticism as not provable, but many aspects of spiritual beliefs and practices have scientific backing. For instance, research has shown that meditation has numerous mental health benefits.

Personally, I found it challenging to seek evidence that validated spirituality at first, but once I did, I realized that spirituality wasn’t just a matter of faith; it also had a basis in scientific evidence.

5. Embrace Ambiguity.

As rational people, we tend to want to find explanations for everything. However, some aspects of life may not be neatly categorized or understood. I used to struggle with this idea of ambiguity because I wanted everything to be logical and explainable.

But once I embraced the unknown, I began to see the beauty and value in spirituality.

Embracing ambiguity means accepting that there may be some things beyond our comprehension and learning to appreciate the mysteries of life.

6. Find a Balance.

Finding a balance between spirituality and rationality is a personal journey that requires the understanding of your own needs and preferences. For me, finding a balance meant incorporating both aspects into my life. I had to find what worked for me and integrate both sides of myself.

This balance meant taking a more rational approach to spirituality, where I sought evidence and embraced ambiguity while still finding time to practice meditation and other spiritual practices that resonated with me.

7. Build a Support System.

Balancing spirituality and rationality can be a challenging journey. Having a support system can make all the difference.

This support system can be made up of like-minded individuals who share your beliefs or those who can offer a different perspective. It’s essential to have people you can turn to for guidance, advice, and support. In my experience, I found that building a support system helped me to navigate the challenges of balancing spirituality and rationality.

8. The Balancing Act: How to Blend Rationality and Spirituality for a Fulfilling Life.

Ultimately, finding a balance between rationality and spirituality is a personal journey. It requires a willingness to explore and a commitment to self-discovery. By keeping an open mind and using critical thinking, you can approach spirituality in a logical and methodical way while still embracing the mysteries of life.

Seeking out evidence and embracing ambiguity can help you to appreciate the value and meaning of spiritual practices and beliefs without abandoning your rationality.

Finding a balance between these two aspects of yourself is about understanding your own needs and preferences and finding a way to integrate both sides in a way that feels authentic and fulfilling.
