You’re Only Making It Worse: Stop Trying To Distract Yourself From Stress

“How can I distract myself from all this stress?”

That’s the number one question I get asked by any new client, and I get it because I used to look for that answer too.   But here’s the thing – looking for something to distract us never works out quite the way we want it to.

Picture this: it’s been a REALLY stressful month at work (or home) and you’ve planned a long weekend with your family to distract you from it.  Except the entire time you’re away, you’re still stressed.  You’re distracted and you aren’t REALLY enjoying the time or focusing on your time away.  You get home and right back into work and stress minus the relaxation you were so in need of.

Truth? Distraction is actually the problem and definitely NOT the solution.

Now before you scroll on, hear me out for a minute….distractions prevent us from focusing.

So if you want some down-time where you can relax and be present to enjoy yourself with friends and family, like on a long weekend getaway or just an afternoon at the park, beach or wherever, you need to stop being distracted by the source of your stress (like an off button) and focus on your friends, family and things you enjoy.

This is why learning to relax and focus is the secret to enjoying your life and work. It means that you can stay relaxed in your time off, focused on enjoying yourself and avoid being distracted by the things that are causing stress.

I’ve spent a lot of time explaining this concept to hundreds of people and seeing lots of light bulbs go off, so I decided to put together this guide to tackling stress with focus rather than distraction. In it, I explain exactly why distraction is causing, not relieving stress (not what we’re usually told) and the better way to deal with it.
