After reading a motivational writing book, I started to write.
I wrote for a short time. And then I gave up. I became too busy with my work and took care of my children. This made me believe I didn’t have time and that writing was futile. There was hardly any noticeable or significant impact on others.
Yet, a few months ago, I decided to resume writing. This time, I committed to practice regularly. Now, I write a new piece daily and even think about publishing stories three times a week on my social media channels.
But why? Why do I dedicate myself to writing every day? The truth is writing is benefiting me in more ways than I anticipated. Allow me to explain further.
1.Writing = Relaxing
As Ernest Hemingway once famously advised, “Write hard and clear about what hurts.”
Personally, I find that writing in a journal helps me maintain good mental health and relieve stress. I typically write about things troubling me, such as stressful events during the pandemic, difficult situations at work, events of my day, or even writing a life story about myself.
Writing about these things also increases my self-awareness, enabling me to understand better my thoughts, feelings, behavior, and beliefs. As a result, I can decrease anxious thoughts and perceived stress.
Through writing, I can express my thoughts and emotions about my career, future aspirations, past failures, and the lessons I’ve learned from them. This allows me to gain a better perspective on my current situation.
Furthermore, rereading my writing provides me with even deeper insights. I can recognize why I feel a specific emotion and learn how to cope with it better in the future.
2. Writing = Expanding My Vocabulary
Writing every day is a fantastic way to improve my vocabulary and become a better communicator. When I write, I play with words and experiment with different ways of expressing myself. This helps me discover new words, phrases, and sentence composition methods.
For example, when I write about a sunset, I challenge myself to describe it vividly. Instead of just saying the sunset was pretty, I think of it as a stunning poem of reds and purples with clover blooms sweetening the sky. Then collect these new words and add them to my vocabulary toolbox.
A wide vocabulary makes my writing more interesting and helps me communicate better in everyday life. I’ll be able to express myself more clearly and have more words to convey my thoughts and ideas.
3. Writing = Developing A Passion For Learning
When I write every day, it helps me become really curious and excited about learning new things. It enables me to unlock a world of knowledge and exploration.
For example, I love learning about different countries and their cultures. When I write, I can create stories or even travel journals about the places I want to visit. I research exciting facts, traditional foods, famous landmarks, and languages. Writing allows me to dive deep into these topics and become a mini expert on the countries I’m writing about. It’s like a virtual adventure and learning so many fascinating things.
4. Writing = Freeing Up My Creativity
Writing every day opens the door to my imagination and lets my creativity soar. When I write, I can create whole worlds, unique characters, and exciting adventures. It feels like I’m the director of my own movie, where I have the power to decide what happens next.
I can create stories about magical creatures, superheroes or even write about my life experiences. The possibilities are endless! Writing regularly helps me unlock my creative potential and think outside the box. I might come up with ideas that surprise even myself!
Writing also helps me develop problem-solving skills. As I write stories, I’ll face challenges like figuring out how my character will solve a problem or how the story will end. These challenges make my brain work, and I’ll discover new and imaginative ways to overcome them. It’s like exercising my creativity muscles, making them more potent with each writing session.
5. Writing Daily = Becoming a 1% Better Writer
I make sure to practice writing every day to enhance my skills, similar to how athletes or musicians train. I prioritize consistency as it leads to progress, even if I only have a short amount of time to dedicate to it each day.
That consistency helps me build momentum and become 1% better every day. It’s like a snowball rolling down a hill, getting bigger and faster as it goes. Each day I write, I sharpen my skills and knowledge. Over time, all those small improvements add up, and I become a better writer.
Writing Can Help You Too!
Writing every day is an amazing experience. It helps me relax and find inner peace in the midst of a busy world. Best of all, it brings out my creative side, giving me endless opportunities to express myself.
Feeling inspired to write? Then grab a pencil and a notebook or open a blank document on your laptop and start writing. Don’t overthink; just let your imagination and words flow freely. You’ll be amazed at the incredible journey writing can take you on!
