I understand what is meant, and I agree that you have to do the inner work, and dissolve selfishness, narcissism, and other non-beneficial or malevolent thoughts and emotions. OK. But, the word “ego” simply means “Self”. So killing the self is not possible, nor is it beneficial think in those terms. Who or what wants you to “kill your Self”, think on that for a minute.

The ego, this temporary outer personality consciousness, with which we identify and manouver in this dense three-dimensional reality, is not innately bad, negative or evil. In fact, I believe it is one of the greatests gifts we have from the Divine Source of All Creation (which some call god). The gift of indivi-dual Self awareness.

It can be negative or evil, if it is guided by low frequency energies, and in fact when a human being is disconnected from the heart, trapped only in the lower mind, that external personality effectively becomes a factory of bad vibes, a pawn of evil, without a doubt.

But it is not about “killing the ego”, in my opinion. It is about making this temporary external personality a beneficial tool of the heart. The ego is like a ball of clay, which has to be molded. If you don’t shape it consciously, that is, if you live unconsciously (that state I call no-heart, trapped in the head) that ball of clay is shaped by internal & external forces that prey on your Self, turning the person into a low-frequency energy machine.

The ego is like a mirror, which when dirty reflects only distortions.

But if we clean it, if we heal, if we free ourselves from the chains of the traumas that we have been dragging around, if we release all that old and stale energy, if we free our Selves from the dungeon of the lower mind, and take up residence in the divine castle of the Heart, we can convert that temporary external personality, into what it was designed for, to be a faithful reflection of the internal divinity, a powerhouse for goodness.

The ego aligned with and at the service of the Heart, is an instrument of the Divine.

When the temporary external personality understands its function, and surrenders to the true divine internal Self, consciously, willingly, joyfully, the external self aligns with the internal Self, there is no need to “kill” anything, it becomes a true and clear reflection of the Divine Light & Love at the core of our True Self.

And for the record, I seriously doubt Rumi said anything similar to this meme.
