Ikenna Ike- Historic American football moments from Arkansas.Giving Arkansas the recognition it deserves.

The Razorbacks have won one national championship, 13 conference championships, four division titles, and have produced 25 consensus All-Americans and 58 players honored as All-Americans. They have also played in 44 bowl games, winning 17 of them.

But what are Arkansas’ greatest achievements in American football?

The 1964 national championship. Arkansas finished the 1964 season with a perfect 11-0 record, including a 14-13 win over Texas in the “Game of the Century” and a 10-7 win over Nebraska in the Cotton Bowl. The Razorbacks were awarded the national title by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) and the Helms Athletic Foundation (HAF), while Alabama was crowned by the Associated Press (AP) and the United Press International (UPI). Arkansas is the only team to claim a national championship without being ranked No. 1 in either poll at any point during the season1.

The 1977 Rothman (FACT) national championship. Arkansas had another undefeated season in 1977, going 11-0 and defeating Oklahoma 31-6 in the Orange Bowl. The Razorbacks were ranked No. 3 by the AP and UPI, behind Notre Dame and Alabama, who both had one loss. However, the Rothman Foundation for the Analysis of Competitions and Tournaments (Rothman (FACT)), a mathematical system that ranked teams based on their opponents’ records and scores, awarded Arkansas the national title. The school does not claim this title, but it is recognized by the NCAA2.

The 1969 “Big Shootout”. Arkansas and Texas met in the final game of the 1969 regular season, both undefeated and ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the nation, respectively. The game was dubbed the “Big Shootout” and was attended by President Richard Nixon, who declared that he would award the national championship plaque to the winner. The game was a defensive battle, with Arkansas leading 14-8 until the final minutes, when Texas scored a touchdown and a two-point conversion to win 15-14. The Longhorns went on to win the national title, while the Razorbacks finished No. 23.

The 2007 “Miracle on Markham II”. Arkansas faced No. 1 LSU in the final game of the 2007 regular season, hoping to spoil the Tigers’ national title hopes. The game was played at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock, also known as “Markham” after the street it is located on. The game was a back-and-forth thriller, with Arkansas leading 21-20 at halftime, LSU leading 30-21 in the fourth quarter, and Arkansas tying the game 31-31 with 57 seconds left. The game went into triple overtime, where Arkansas scored a touchdown and a two-point conversion to win 50-48. The Razorbacks became the first unranked team to beat a No. 1 team in overtime, and the second team to beat a No. 1 team in triple overtime (after Stanford beat USC in 2007).

The 2010 Sugar Bowl. Arkansas earned its first BCS bowl berth in 2010, after finishing 10-2 and second in the SEC West. The Razorbacks faced No. 6 Ohio State in the Sugar Bowl, hoping to end the SEC’s dominance in the BCS era. The game was close throughout, with Arkansas trailing 28-10 in the third quarter, but rallying to cut the deficit to 31-26 in the fourth quarter. The Razorbacks had a chance to take the lead with 1:08 left, when they blocked a punt and recovered the ball at the Ohio State 18-yard line. However, on the next play, quarterback Ryan Mallett was intercepted by Solomon Thomas, sealing the win for the Buckeyes. The game was later vacated by Ohio State due to NCAA violations.

We also need to talk about The Attack, one of the eight teams that make up the MLFB, and is part of the league’s “Core Four” teams. What have they done?

They are the first pro football team in Little Rock, Arkansas since the Arkansas Diamonds, which played in the Continental Football League and later in the American Football Association.

They hired Earnest Wilson as their head coach for the 2023 season, who was previously the head coach at Defiance College.

They have a roster of talented players, including Michael Badejo, a defensive end who was named the MLFB Defensive Player of the Week in Week 2.

They have a loyal fan base that supports them in their games, and a catchy team name that reflects their aggressive and energetic style of play.

The Attack Arkansas team is a new and exciting addition to the professional football scene, and hopes to make a mark in the MLFB and beyond. They are the pride of Arkansas, and one of the most promising teams in the league.

The Razorbacks have faced many challenges and triumphs over the years, and have always played with pride and passion. They are the pride of the state of Arkansas, and one of the most respected teams in college football.
