Teaching Beyond Color

You know, as an art teacher and visual artist, I’ve really been reflecting on my experiences, especially recently teaching in San Nicolas, Aruba.

Aruba is such a vibrant little island, with most folks having that gorgeous bronze or dark skin that just glows. During my time there, I came across some challenges I think are worth mentioning.

In my classroom, I often heard my students, who are predominantly darker-skinned, blame issues on their race, saying things like “It’s because I’m black. As someone fairer-skinned, I had a hard time directly relating to that. But as an art teacher, I see color differently. In art, black is literally #000000, and white is #FFFFFF. I encourage the kids to look past just those definitions and learn colors right, and to not let their skin dictate excuses or limits.
I get that the term ‘black’ has taken on other meanings over time. But I believe it’s time to move past those stigmas. Way back, humans got labeled as just black or white, but nowadays we’re going for a world without that kind of judging. You aren’t “black”; you’ve got a beautiful dark, bronze glow. And I’m no “white”! In my classes, I aim to teach seeing beyond skin color or gender.

Speaking of gender, the future shouldn’t be thought of as “female” any more than the past as “male”. While women definitely overcame oppressive hurdles and should be proud, we need to focus now on unity and appreciating our shared journey. The future is about humanity altogether, embracing all shades from light to gorgeous dark colors.
My goal is to give my students the power to look past labels society puts on them and to value diversity’s beauty. We shouldn’t be defined by history nor seek payback for it. Instead, we should celebrate our wins and work toward a future where every person, no matter gender or skin tone, is valued.
