Students at Columbia University calling for divestment from South Africa (1984)
From Reddit. “An anti-apartheid protest by students at the entrance to the Hamilton Hall building of Columbia University, New York City, 4th April 1984. The protestors are calling for the university to divest itself of its investments in South Africa.”
While violence, racism, hate, anti-Semitism is never welcome, it is often the role of our younger generations to remind us that we should not be heavily investing in a war pushed by a corrupt tyrant at the expense of civilians, including thousands of children.
While Biden has pushed back against Bibi, and pushed for more aid directly, and deescalation, I would like to see any future US support be highly conditional. Hamas, Bibi—extremists create hate, suffering, and harm innocents. While many of these protests have been laudably, fiercely peaceful, even in many of those cases police response has not been peaceful.
Donald “Muslim Ban / Finish the Job” Trump is far worse, and will be happy to actively support tyrants, and has asked if protestors can be shot. He will decimate our relationships with allies, cozy up to Putin, etc. Third party votes only help Trump—let us focus and defeat this will-be tyrant who will destroy our protections for voting rights, women, activists, journalists, immigrants, allies, climate crisis.
Vote like countless lives depend on it. Push President Biden to do more and better—for peace on earth, for our climate crisis, for fundamental rights, for equitable access to education and for investment in needed, long-ignored infrastructure (like getting rid of lead pipes, public transportation).
Trump can not be pushed in a good direction—he cares only for himself.
