I need your help.
I am a privileged, white female on the verge of being 70 years old. I was raised by a single mother with the help of a village of other women, and very Southern grandparents.
I am a liberal-thinking Democrat with friends on both sides of the aisle. I pride myself in maintaining those friendships despite our differences, though sometimes I fail miserably.
I am currently reading Prequel: An American Fight Against Fascism by Rachel Maddow. I have read Caste: The Origin of Our Discontents by Isabel Wilkerson. And I have read many of the books on American history by the well-respected historian Jon Meacham.
I watch both MSNBC and Fox News in an attempt to understand both sides.
I am consumed with guilt over our country’s past, while at the same time proud of our fledgling Democracy and the hope that it gives all its people.
I am also consumed with fear.
What if we make the wrong choices, protest the wrong policies, donate to the wrong causes, vote for the wrong candidates? Will our country be brought to its knees? Will the great American experiment fail?
And what is my part in this? Do I even have a role to play—and will it be of any significance?
Should I be on the streets carrying slogan-bearing signs with other like-minded counterparts or should I sit quietly in my big, comfy chair and post memes that are bound to make some cheer and others write defensive comments or worse, just scroll on by—not caring either way?
By now, I am sure you are thinking what could you possibly do to help this anxiety-filled woman who is probably losing sleep and picking her cuticles to the bone. I have a few thoughts:
>> Do your research and look for the heart and truth of it all. The logic and the compassion.
>> Don’t follow the masses but find what resonates with your intellect and your soul.
>> Take action in whatever way you feel is right for your circumstances and your passions.
>> Vote with your conscience and your convictions for the candidates you truly believe will best benefit your condition and the condition of all our people, our country, and ultimately, the world.
I believe in us and have hope we will make the right choices, not because of anything I say, post, or support in any way but because we have all done our homework, searched our heart, and followed a course we believe is best for America.
And I will accept whatever “we the people” collectively decide because that is the democratic way.
But I am also looking at homes in Canada—just in case we make the wrong decision.
