*Editor’s Note: Elephant is not your doctor or hospital. Our lawyers would say “this web site is not designed to, and should not be construed to provide medical advice, professional diagnosis, opinion, or treatment to you or any other individual, and is not intended as a substitute for medical or professional care and treatment. Always consult a health professional before trying out new home therapies or changing your diet.” But we can’t afford lawyers, and you knew all that. ~ Ed

Most of what we do every day comes from our subconscious mind.

We’d like to think we’re consciously choosing what we do all day, but we’re not.

We’re running mostly by our subconscious programming—by habits and beliefs and tendencies we may not even consciously realize that we have. We have particular ways of looking at the world—and patterned ways of reacting to it.

Often, when we’re struggling with something, the reasons can be found within our subconscious. Our subconscious mind knows the reasons for why we do what we do.

That’s why it’s so powerful to be able to work directly with the subconscious mind.

Our subconscious mind is the part that holds our beliefs, our memories, our imagination, and our habits.

Our conscious mind is quite limited, though we’d like to (consciously) believe otherwise! Our subconscious is about 95 percent of our mind, which means our conscious mind is only about 5 percent of our mind. So that’s why, even if we consciously say we want to do something or change something…things may not change. Our deeper subconscious mind may hold beliefs that go against it. We may have deeper beliefs that are preventing whatever it is we say that we want from happening.

With hypnotherapy, we work directly with the subconscious mind using hypnosis. Hypnosis is a state of relaxation. It allows us to bypass the critical factor of the mind and communicate directly with the subconscious.

There are misconceptions about hypnosis—for example, that it’s a dramatic altered state of consciousness or that we lose all control. But hypnosis is a natural state of consciousness that we go into each day. For example, the times right before sleep and right after waking up are natural hypnotic states. When we get caught up in our thoughts while driving somewhere and realize that we don’t remember the drive, it’s a state of hypnosis (called highway hypnosis). Daydreaming could also be considered a state of hypnosis.

And when we are in hypnosis, we have full control—we can choose what to say and not say; we can choose what we do.

There are so many things we can work with in hypnotherapy.

Here are 15 things we can shift and work on:

1. Feeling stuck

2. Inner conflict resolution

3. Grief

4. Fears

5. Letting go of limiting beliefs

6. Improving self-confidence and self-esteem

7. Improving memory and recall

8. Quitting smoking

9. Problem-solving

10. Self-sabotage

11. Improving performance (including getting better at something you’re already good at!)

12. Building better habits (and letting go of bad habits)

13. Career advancement

14. Stress

15. Attaining goals

There are so many other things we can do with hypnotherapy—really, the list is endless. We can use it for dream work, to understand what our dreams could be telling us. We can improve athletic performance. We can improve health, discover hidden talents, and we can enhance focus and study habits. We can work to find a lost object. Hypnotherapy can help with pain management.

What I love so much about hypnotherapy is that it is such a powerful and effective technique. Because we can communicate directly with the subconscious, we can get to the deeper causes of different beliefs or difficulties we may experience in life. This gives us more awareness and more clarity. It also allows us to shift our behavior.

And when we free ourselves from the beliefs and patterns that are holding us back, we can move more consciously and more authentically in the world. We can move more wholeheartedly toward what we really want and how we want to live our lives.
