Emotional starvation is a thing.

Don’t let a bad day dull your emotional complexion. If you’re involved in a relationship with an emotional unavailable person, learn to take care of your basic needs. Don’t depend on someone else for feeding your dreams and your expectations. Easier said than done, right?

Here are three little underrated tricks to brighten up your day almost effortlessly.

Stay hydrated.

The simple act of drinking water (or lemon water) is a good way to start a self-care routine. Hydration helps you feel better, it washes away toxins and it reminds your body to flush away negative thoughts. Upgrade it! Every time you take a sip, focus on something negative you want to let go of.

Positive reinforcement.

The idea is to boost and support a positive self-image. If you’re experiencing emotional starvation, odds are there’s a lot of negative self-talk playing hide and seek inside your mind. Write down a few positive affirmations and place them somewhere you’re sure to see them. Stay away from motivational poster-like quotes—they could even affect your mood. You want to say something positive about yourself, as if you’re cheering up your best friend.

Unlock your creativity.

When our heart is on a diet, it becomes blind. Emotional blindness occurs when you survive the day with no expectations, when you think you can’t afford to think of the future, when you feel a vague sense of increasing discomfort you can’t really fight. Give your heart some perspective and make a vision board. Make a collage of inspiring words, collect images of things you like and picture of goals you want (or wanted) to reach. Visualize those goals and polish your hopes.
