Musings on Daylight Savings Time or Disrupted Sleeping Time:
There are many people that look forward to DST as if it were a gift of time. I have never been a fan of this unnatural and sudden change in time. I look at it as an artificial expedient of time. It shortens our weekend by one hour, we lose one hour of sleep, we are one hour older. All of these hours add up over time. There is a big price to pay for this tinkering of time. We are already sleep starved and this major disruption makes it all the more deficient. Nature has already built in the seasonal daylight transitions but it is approximately 1 minute per day, not one hour overnight. This is no different than jet lag and is a contributor to poor sleeping patterns, which is directly connected to other health issues. It would be much better to leave the time alone and either keep it DST year round or better yet, eliminate the antiquated practice altogether. Leave the time alone and let the days naturally and gradually get longer and shorter depending on the season. I say this as a health coach and someone who regularly observes the effects of sleeping disorders on humans.
