Today I contemplate meeting the Black Mother Goddess. Everywhere I read that she is the darker side of ourselves, yet I have always known this only tells half of the story and tells it a little back to front. I just have never known how to express these thoughts until this moment. In a moment of quiet contemplation this is what was revealed about her:
The Black Mother Goddess is not the darker half of ourselves but the Wisdom part of ourselves and universe, who illuminates our shadow self. With her tools: mirror, sword, bell etc. she beckons us to move beyond the shadows, beyond duality, beyond hateful thoughts and rhetoric – into the light of compassion, love, warm-heartedness, wisdom, non-duality. She is a hard task master and you have to be willing to walk on hot coals when you meet her- the coals of your own shadowy thoughts and emotions.
Even though in colonialism and slavery, the Black Mother Goddess was viewed as the other, dangerous, sensual and mysterious. Amongst her own she is beloved, associated with being a keeper of wisdom and ancient knowing. In her story of saving the world the Yoruba Mother Goddess Osun was given the name Ikole (messenger of God) and it is also said by many that she founded the ancient Ifa Oracular system; Mamaki is the dark Tibetan Mother Goddess who holds up her mirror supreme, so we can see into our anger, Ugly and move beyond it all; Ekajati, another black Mother Goddess of the Tibetan Buddhist Tradition, is the Mother of the Mothers of the Buddhas and keeper of the secret mantras, secret symbols of knowing, and protector of the dharma. While Kali is the Dark Mother of Compassion, who holds the sword that cuts through samsara and illusions. African Egyptian Goddess Auset, known more commonly as Isis, is the keeper of secret healing knowledge and secret mantras known as hekau. Our great lady the Black Madonna is known by many epithets, which can be summarized as, “The One Who Saves.” Her power to transmute negative to good is renown throughout the world – no surprise, as her predecessor is the Queen of the Nile, Auset (Isis).
I could write an extensive essay on this, but In conclusion – traveling to the bosom of the black Mother Goddess, I discovered is to travel to the nurturing breast of enlightenment and ONE LOVE……And on a final note, the Black Mother Goddess is dark because she is – not for the mere fact she personifies nature. When we stop distorting her and erasing her, we stop distorting and erasing our own truths and realities – to become free once again.
