Throughout my life I’ve never identified with either of the two major archetypes that have come to be the status quo, labeling everyone as either a ‘leader’ of ‘ follower’. Alphas lead and Betas follow. So, what are you, a leader or a follower? Like most things in life, the answer to that question is never as simple as choosing A or B.

This has been a topic that has consumed me for quite some time now. I understand that nothing is ever as simple as choosing one or the other; by answering a question either ‘yes’ or ‘no’. There are always grey areas and in-between answers in order to understand any whole truth. Throughout my life, especially in my travels, I have witnessed a wide range of personality types in people from all corners of the Earth. In observing them I came to realize and better understand the array of different archetypes people can embody. Hopefully by understanding this, we can better understand others and ourselves and not be so limited in our thinking when it comes to labeling people. I hope that by sharing what I have discovered in this narrowly covered topic we can better understand ourselves and each other.

There are five major human archetypes that most of the population can be categorized into. Allow me to paint a vivid picture for these archetypes using well-known fictional characters as examples. The bestselling book series A Song of Ice and Fire or the HBO adaptation Game of Thrones have had great success partly because of their wide range of archetypes found within its vast array of characters. Since the publication of George RR Martin’s first book in the ASoIaF series and the airing of the first GoT episode, the lives of these fictional beings have fueled our imaginations like dragon fire.

Below are the definitions of these archetypes along with the popular fictional characters that best personify each of them.

Alpha (Daenerys Targaryen & Khal Drogo): You are confident, you are your own person and have complete confidence in everything you do. You need constant social interaction otherwise you start to feel depressed or “drained” like your batteries need to recharge. You are a natural leader who actively seeks out leadership positions. Conversely you do not do well answering to authority.

Beta (Podrick Payne & Samwell Tarly): The born follower. Always nervous around other people and social situations because you’re always afraid that people are judging you.

Omega (Jon Snow aka Aegon Targaryen & Arya Stark): You are completely your own person. Your strength doesn’t flow from those around you, it comes from within. You do not need anyone, and you can even be emotionally distant due to your complete self-possession, though you won’t see yourself as distant at all. You trust few people and foster even fewer intimate relationships, people must earn your trust, it is not given freely. Omegas generally make the best leaders, though they never seek out the position. More accurately, it is cast upon them by their peers at which point they reluctantly accept the position until their primary goals are achieved; at which point they seek to leave the position as quickly as possible, which is the polar opposite of the Alpha Male. George Washington is famously Omega in leadership personality and was called “The greatest character of our age” for stepping down from his position of power willingly after two terms as president, despite popular demand for him to remain in power.

Sigma (Lady Tyrell, Tyrion Lannister, Varys & Petyr Baelish): You are a manipulative mastermind. You are a spider waiting to lay your trap. You possess a cunning, intuitive mind and can sway people to your will. You don’t have the casual swagger of the Alpha or the Omega but you do have a clever presence about you and people tend to be wary and respect you for that.

Gamma (Unaccredited Background Characters): The “invisible” person. There is nothing really spectacular about you. Your personality and presence usually blends in with the rest of the room and you’re just sort of… there.

Now that we have a general understanding of these archetypes, let’s dive into the recent rise of one in particular: the Omega. At this pivotal epoch in our history, the human archetype is a topic that requires more attention in order to bolster discernment for the evolution of our increasingly intertwined global society. Seven and a half billion people live on this planet, and we are divided now more than ever in our known human history. One major catalyst in this dilemma is the separation we have created from each other. The severe rift and imbalance between the divine masculine and feminine energies inherent in all of us has fueled the awakening of the predominantly dormant Omega archetype. The power of the Omegas, known for their unique balance of both masculine and feminine energies, is rising congruently with the increase in global consciousness.

The challenges and questions we face are thus: How do we overcome the overwhelming duality that we have been living in for generations? How do we break the wheel that has been spinning since long before we took human form in this life? What if this madness we have been living in has already begun to correct itself? What if the first of these seeds have already been planted by our wise ancestors and they have already begun sprouting on all corners of the earth?

Since the beginning of our planet’s existence, nature has always found a way to maintain balance. Just as mushrooms grow from the decay of dead trees that could no longer reach the light, the Omega humans shall rise from the ashes of those who have succumbed to similar fates.

The recent global shift in consciousness has been the kindling to the fire of the Omega’s cauldron. We’ve heard time and time again people saying “Stop giving your power away to others and reclaim your own power.” This can be translated to “Stop being a compliant and submissive Beta by lifting up the aggressive, self-serving, power-hungry Alphas and transform yourself into an Omega.” Why should we do this? If we look to the past and present and reflect on how most of those who have come to power treat those they are meant to serve, we can see who they are truly in service to: themselves, or more directly their “unhealthy ego”.

The problem with the Alpha/Beta relationship is that it is similar to that of a parasite feeding off a host. More often than not, Alphas live to serve their own ego as the Omega’s ego exists only to serve them so that they can in turn serve others. Omegas do not seek power, but rather power seeks them because of their inherent altruistic nature. They empower others as opposed to using others for their own personal gains. They understand how power has corrupted the minds of men and women for millennia and this is why they are willing to give it up the first chance they get.

A prime example of how the Omegas live can be found in the portrayal of the Hindu deity Ganesha. In most photos and sculptures Ganesha is depicted with a rat looking up at him or Ganesha riding on the rat’s back. The rat, which symbolizes the ego, is something that we all have and can either live in service to it or train it to serve as our loyal companion. In other words, we can make our ego our ‘bitch’. This is the path of the Omega male and female. They have trained their egos to be their faithful servants so that they can live to fulfill their life’s purpose: to be of service to others. Like Ganesha, the Omega will assist in the removal of obstacles in your path so that you may reach your fullest potential.

It is clear that our current system of global government is flawed. The “strong and powerful” still prey on the “weak and powerless” through the illusion of power and because of this, unnecessary suffering remains a lingering constant throughout our world. Again, we must look at the events that brought us to this current state. In many instances, the insecurities of those who fit the mold of the Alpha archetype lead them to incite fear in others in order to maintain their power. Is this not an act of great cowardice? These people do so because in order to overcome their own fears, they believe that they must instill fear in others. This can be seen as one of the “masks of masculinity” that too many people in our society wear on a daily basis. On the inside, these people are more like scared little children deathly afraid of someone knocking their mask off and having their true faces exposed to the world.

In many cases with Alphas, confidence is the mask they wear to hide their own fear and their loud voices are used to drown out those of logic and reason. When it comes to friendships and relationships, Alphas will naturally seek out Betas in order to achieve balance. Conversely, Omegas tend to seek other Omegas in friendships and intimate relationships because of their inherent balance of masculine and feminine energies. Omegas want their mates to be free and wild as their equal partners in life. They do not look for someone to complete them, for they are already complete, which is also why many Omegas are often subject to be labeled as loners.

So why are Omegas emerging all of the sudden? This is a mere matter of cause and effect. Ask yourself this: Is it not insane to give away our power to others who know less about us than we know of ourselves? Why do we keep electing people to govern over us whose primary interests are their own personal gains? To answer this in as directly as possible: Those who seek to satisfy their unhealthy self-serving ego in its quest for power are those who will seek positions of power.

Human life can be one of the greatest art forms for those who consciously choose to make the best of their time on this planet. Omegas will seek to assist others in becoming their own leaders so as not to maintain the levels of codependence that the leader-follower relationship entails. Too many of us have come to love our mental ‘chains’ that limit our potential and defend our oppressors like some sort of widespread Stockholm Syndrome.

When alphas say “Surrender yourself to me and I will lead you.” The betas surrender their power and follow. On the other hand an Omega will say, “Surrender your power to no one. Allow me to show you how to ignite your own flame so that you may lead yourself.” Once that flame is lit, intuition takes over and that becomes your guide. You are then free to follow your higher power.

When we arrive at the tipping point where enough humans around the world reach within to discover their own power instead of giving it away to others, we will see great change in our world. In this dance through life, each of us must find our own path and respect and honor the paths of those we meet along the way.

“The Spiritual journey is individual, highly personal. It can’t be organized or regulated. It isn’t true that everyone should follow one path. Listen to your own truth.” ~ Ram Das
