In the midst of the chaos of the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago, Allen Ginsberg sat in the center of the violence doing his best to quell it with his gentle meditation and chanting “Ommmmm.”
There are definitely shades of Ginzy (who would have turned 92 today) in the actions of Anthony Alcalde, a yoga teacher in Managua (who, coincidentally, was born in Paterson, NJ, where AG grew up). As events have unfolded in Nicaragua in recent weeks, Alcalde has been seen leading meditation sessions and yoga practices in some most unexpected places: acro yoga in the streets among a march, meditating in front of fires set by students restricting passage of vehicles, and last week he and a small group sat in the center of Rotonda Jean Paul Genie meditating among the crosses set their by mourners to commemorate those lost in the recent struggle.
The spirit of Ginsberg lives on through the actions of Alcalde and so many others around the world who seek peace and harmony and justice even when it seems there is little hope of attaining it. It’s exactly what Ginsberg would have wanted for his birthday. Namaste. #SOSNicaragua
