Reiki literally translates as “Universal Life Force” or “Universal Energy” It is a method of energy healing brought to the modern world by Dr. Mikao Usui in the mid 19th century, Japan. Mikao studied and meditated on the healing powers of past deities and believed he could channel the energy through his body in order to heal others. Today Reiki is practiced all over the world and used for the physical, spiritual and mental health of millions.
The objective of a Reiki treatment is to restore internal harmony to the body and use the energy from the universe to remove any old energy blocks you may have. For example if you have suffered a trauma then your body will have taken on the energy of that situation. Reiki can be used to shift out the old energy which is no longer serving you and restore you with a balanced original state of self.
There are 5 main principles or beliefs of Reiki:
1. Today I give thanks for my many blessings.
2. Just for today, I will not worry.
3. Today I will not be angry.
4. Today I will do my work honestly.
5. Today I will be kind to my neighbour and every living thing.
A typical Reiki session can last between 20 minutes to 50 minutes and cost £40-£70. You will spend time getting to know your practitioner and discuss and presenting complaints. You will lay down (fully clothed) with your practitioner and they will be channeling Reiki into their hands and mind and then in turn passing the energy onto you. Some practitioners work with their hands hovering over your body and some more with a hands on your body approach. Practitioners are trained to be in such a mindful state they are able to detect blocks within you and help restore your natural balance.
Some people experience Reiki as an out of body experience and others claim to feel absolutely nothing in the moment but start to see the effects hours even days later.
As with all healing methods there are of course skeptics and people that do not believe anything of this sort can work. I am however very much in the camp of try it, try everything to see what works for you. If imagining yourself happy whilst jumping on a trampoline, one finger up your nose and singing Beyonce does the trick then use that and teach others how to do it.
