No Chief
(for John Zerzan)
by Gabriel Rosenstock
Look, said the archaeologist
we looked
Look carefully, she said.
An equal distribution of bones
no Chief here!
We sift the dust of the dead.
If there was a Chief
he had no more
to eat
to wear
than any other member of his tribe
An equal amount of ornaments
and other artifacts all distributed
without favour
or bribe
The dig will soon be over
we’ll all disperse and go our ways
I want to stay here
Among old bones
