Okay, Waylon, it’s time for the ladies to counter. My eco crush number ten is…Rogan Gregory (I have a thing for beards).
The NYC-based designer of labels Rogan, Loomstate (t-shirts and jeans made entirely from organic cotton) was also a collaborator with Bono and his wife Ali at Edun up until January of this year, with the goal of bringing trade instead of simply aid to the developing world. Stated Gregory in a Wallpaper magazine interview: “We are pushing through, wherever we go, to create sustainability.”
Loomstate has been cited by fashion insiders as the origin of a movement in fashion, pushing eco fabrics into mainstream stores. Gregory tackles the organic cotton certification question head-on in a recent New York Observer interview: ““The certification, it’s tricky,” the designer said of his organic labels. “We get a piece of paper that says all of our cotton is certified. But we don’t go to every field. All of our vendors we have to trust. It’s not a perfect system. And the more legitimate demand for it, the more there are going to be people trying to cheat the system.”
Because “conventionally grown cotton uses more insecticides than any other single crop and epitomizes the worst effects of chemically dependent agriculture” (PANNA), Gregory makes my list for choosing organic cotton, and being straight up about the challenges that lie ahead.
