It’s January 2020. You may be thinking…holy sh*t. This isn’t where I planned to be. I hate my job. I love my life. I want to do something I care about. Something that lights me up. Something that I’m passionate about.
Yeah, me too. That’s why in August, after Burning Man, I quit my job. I left 15 years of HR and Recruiting in corporate america to start my own business. I help folks who are stressed and frustrated to make a plan, quit their jobs, and live a life they love.
Now, first things first…
If you’re thinking, I don’t like this job, but it’s all I know. It’s all I know how to do. Cue buzzer sound. Ehhhh. Nope. You’re wrong. You know how to do LOTS of things. Maybe you’re great at communications. Or crunching numbers. Or giving advice. Or slogging through paperwork. Maybe you’ve even done a yoga teacher training program and teach on the side. Or are a personal trainer. Or do massage therapy. Or sell essential oils. You’ve got lots of skills. It’s time to start thinking about them as yours. You are not your career. You are so much more than “what you do”.
There are four main ways to work in America. I’m calling them the four exits from Corporate America.
Four Exits from Corporate America
- Start your own project. You can quit your crummy 9-5 and start something amazing. The world does need you to do your unique and incredible thing! Here are some ways to do that:
- Start up business
- Become a digital nomad
- Move to a cheaper country, work there
- Start your own non-profit
- Go back to school. Study and practice. Sign up to study under someone or go attend a program.
- Nun or monk
- Seminary
- Student
- Craft
- Trades
- Work for something or someone. You could find a job…
-
- At a Co-Op business
- At a local business
- In an office
- With the military
- With the government.
- at a non-profit
- Opt out of the system entirely.
-
- Volunteer
- Hermit
- Unemployment
- Live without cash – just barter and trade.
- Own property and rent or AirBnb it.
- Investments (stocks/bonds)
- Create products or services
Many people want to quit, or have quit, but feel that they will go back to another corporate job someday. It’s the fall back plan. A dreaded and painful fall back plan.
There is a way to quit and not go back. It requires shifting your relationship to corporate america. It requires creating a sustainable plan.
In order to shift your relationship to this thing, here are the items that need to be tended to.
Connect to yourself and intuition, and work the plan to get out of the corporate world.
Still not sure where to start? Join me on Thursday, January 9th for a one of a kind interactive workshop, if I don’t do this job what do I do?
