The Narcissism & Mindf*ckery of New Age Spirituality.

Let’s skip the spiritual foreplay and get right into it.

New age spirituality is sprinkled with narcissistic tendencies. It is artificial and robotic in nature, except for the apparent screaming orgasm you’re promised to experience at the end of a manifestation ritual.

This type of spirituality is hijacked. It is not organic, and it perpetuates the life force of a “spiritual ego.” This type of ego will convince you that you are above others, must ditch those who don’t vibe with you, or that the spiritual journey is all about you and your wants and needs. It is rampant in new age communities, and the sh*tty part is that many well-meaning individuals are sucked into these practices that are actually used for mind control.

You have Netflix, right? “Wild Wild Country,” “Holy Hell,” “Children of God,” and “Enlighten Us” are all cult documentaries, and some of these spiritual practices have a similar vibe (minus the forced sex).

I’ll list some for ya.

>> Goddess circles/rose circles/moon circles.

>> Goddess-type photoshoots where you are awkwardly bending yourself into a pretzel to look seductive or like you are somehow one with a tree.

>> Positive vibes only ideology (um hi, are you human?).

>> Spiritual elitism (who is a better healer or teacher or more enlightened?).

>> The whole “Let’s get to 5D” mentality.

>> There is no such thing as evil, and if you believe there is then, whoa, you’re “asleep.”

Oh, the list goes on. The point is that true organic spiritual teachings have been packaged as this whole movement of “love and light” that encourages people to abandon any human emotions and believe that chanting “Om” with crystals up your ass will somehow get you closer to God.

Oh, but wait, my bad. You can’t use the word God. It has to be Source or Universe or some other God-like Lakshmi, because if we call Prime Creator “God,” we are being too limiting or human or 3D. But it is important to remember to call yourself God (insert forehead slap).

I don’t know about you, but that’s the biggest mindf*ck I have ever read. Now that that’s been established, let’s figure out some solutions, shall we?

  1. Listen to your intuition. We are each extremely intuitive, even if you think you’re not. If something feels off, trust it. Don’t question it.
  2. If you have friends or loved ones who are being swept up in all the new agey stuff, don’t try to convince them to see the bigger picture. It won’t work. People warned me, and I didn’t want to listen. Many well-meaning people are part of this movement and don’t have nefarious intentions. They will see through the distortions (or not) in their own time.
  3. Remember that spirituality itself isn’t wrong or evil. Many teachings are organic, and it is up to you to figure out what rings true to you. Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water.
  4. This is probably the hardest part, but do your best not to judge yourself (if you are or were in it) or others. I joke, tease, and talk about this madness all the time, but at the end of the day, I understand people are on their own journey and constantly remind myself to stay in my own lane.
