Meet Lucy!

Dogs of Kitsap Humane Society

Today I took Lucy to my regular beach spot at Old Mill Park. We had the place to ourselves for an hour. We walked in the water and watched the birds and relaxed in the grass of the hotel. People started to show up and we were gonna head out when an older gentleman walked up to us.

“Can I ask your dogs name?” He said.
Lucy walked over to him and leaned her head on his leg. He started to pet her when I said “It’s Lucy.” He let out a quick laugh and then he sat down in the grass with us. Lucy pushed her head into his chest and he wrapped his arms around her. “She looks exactly like the dog I had as a kid. Her name was Lady.”

He went on to tell me about how Lady was there for him when his mom got sick and died and he had to live with his grandma. “She was my grandmas dog.” He told us, while he kissed Lucy’s head and she laid down next to him. “I had never been close to the dog” he continued. “But, she followed me around those first few weeks like she was mine. I would tell her to go away, to leave me alone, to let me cry by myself but she wouldn’t leave. Even when I yelled at her to go, she just stayed with me with her head in my lap. She wouldn’t leave me. She would never leave me alone.” He sighed and looked at me, “It didn’t matter what I said. She acted like I was her job. Like she had to watch out for me. Like she couldn’t leave my side. It was like, well, almost like someone told her not to.”

He said as time went on, the dog and him became inseparable. He said she let him cry into her fur and miss his mom. He said he started to feel better and she still stayed with him. She went with him everywhere, running along with him when he rode his bike and hanging out at his friends houses. “She was my guardian angel.” He said. “She was my best friend.”

He told me to make sure people know how special Lucy is. “This dog is just like that one.” He said, petting Lucy’s fur. “She needs someone to take care of. I can tell.”

Then he kissed Lucy goodbye, got up and waved at me. As he walked away Lucy watched him go slowly wagging her tail. Then she came over and laid next to me while I tried not to cry. I looked at Lucy and she put her head in my lap.

He was right. Dogs really are amazing.
