We are doomed

This morning I sat in my beautiful garden listening to the finches and bushtits fussing over the sunflower seed I leave out every morning.

My garden is a microcosm of the entire earth. As beautiful as it is, the garden is an artificial. Should the power fail, the pumps in the Koi pond will stop, eventually. The fish will perish as the water evaporates and algae clogs what remains. When the water source shuts down, almost everything in the yard will die. Grass, trees, plants of all sorts will wither under the intense southern California sun. Eventually, even the weeds that will take over will also die. The yard will become an empty brown landscape, incapable of supporting life as we appreciate.

The host of birds, lizards, and rodents that survive now have a lifespan of five to six years. They do not know what is coming and will not be alive to witness the end humanity has wrought.

Doom awaits our society. The ability of the earth to heal itself requires man’s absence. Humanity’s inability to change because of greed, politics, selfishness, and behavioral characteristics make the collapse of civilized society and eventual disappearance of humans as a major life form on the planet inevitable.

The sheer number of humans now inhabiting the planet is unsustainable. As global warming reduces usable land on the coastline, by sea level rise, increased temperatures and overuse ruin agricultural land, rendering them useless, overfishing depletes fisheries, and pollution takes its toll, everywhere there will be an increasing population of displaced with nowhere to go. This will occur in the developed AND developing world.

Simple mathematics tells the tale. We’ve long ago passed the tipping point of exponential growth without the addition of climate change. With climate change in the progressing at pace and our refusal to take action, calamity is the only thing assured.

  • Food production worldwide is down 60-90% because of climate related land loss.
  • Housing availability and affordability can not keep pace with the growth of humans.
  • Employment opportunities will continue to shrink.
  • Services are down and will continue to be curtailed and fail in the face of disasters.
  • Homelessness is up and will continue to rise.
  • Potable water reductions will reach a critical level by 2040.
  • HALF of the world’s water resources are in five countries: Brazil, Russia, US, Canada, China.
  • Pollution making the rest of water unusable.
  • Only 2.5 percent of the world’s fresh water is in glaciers and by 2050 that will have melted into the sea.

In 2021, the world’s population grew to 7.8 billion. The optimum number of people to inhabit the earth is less than one-fourth that at 1.5 billion. Scientists predict a maximum of 9.3 billion is what the earth can support. By 2050, we will have exceeded that. Humans crush the planet’s resources and we do not have the will to save ourselves.
