A Poem for the Seeker

School taught me
I was as good as the numbers.
Society taught me
I was as good as the trend.
This life consisting of:
“Who do you want me to be?”
Try as I might, I would never succeed.
I would change, change,
Until I saw approval on your face—
Living a lie, living at death’s pace.
And after all my wondering,
And after all my cries,
It dawned on me
That we all put up a disguise.
And as I was staggering through—
Drenched in lies—
I found this flame within,
Is my only guide.
I realized no one is going to hand me
This acceptance that I seek.
No one is going to cut me open
To let my heart speak.
So I looked in the mirror,
And promised that girl,
I would take care of her
To the end of the world.
I told her fear would not stop her
From all she could be.
I told her I’d work through
her mountains of insecurity…
And I told her, undoubtedly,
I will set her free.
