Governor Hickenlooper is expected to sign the bill into law.

As Representative Mark Ferrandino, Colorado’s first openly-gay Speaker of the House, so eloquently stated:

“This bill is about three simple things,”… “It’s about love, it’s about family, and it’s about equality under the law.”

All 38 House Democrats voted for the bill, and two of the Republicans voted in favor as well.

Since the 2006 adoption of the amendment to define marriage as being between a man and a woman, the proposal of a bill recognizing gay marriages is not currently feasible in Colorado. Still, the civil union bill is a great step forward.

What is interesting to me is that in a state that is largely conservative (outside of the Denver/Boulder area) Colorado has eight gay legislators, and is the first state with openly gay members serving in both houses. Perhaps we are approaching a time politically where a person’s integrity and intelligence truly matter more to us than what he or she does in the bedroom.

Perhaps we are entering an era where politicians will again be willing to vote their consciences instead of doing what is politically expedient:
