Update: Adventure Film & Patagonia present 180 DEGREES SOUTH: CONQUERORS OF THE USELESS

At Boulder Theater this Thursday, July 15, 2010, 8:00 pm (doors open at 7:30 p.m.), $12.50.

Soundtrack by Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse, James Mercer of the Shins and Mason Jennings 180° South: Conquerors of the useless, follows Jeff Johnson as he retraces the epic 1968 journey of one of the most unique and prolific environmentalists of our time—Patagonia founder, Yvon Chouinard and his friend Doug Tompkins, as they travel 5,000 miles from California to Patagonia.

His hope is simply to find unclimbed mountains and un-ridden waves in the spirit of his heroes. Along the way Jeff gets shipwrecked off Easter Island, surfs the longest wave of his life, and prepares himself for a rare ascent of Cerro Corcovado. His life turns when he meets up in a rainy hut with Chouinard and Tompkins who, once driven purely by a love of climbing and surfing, now value above all the experience of raw nature and have come to Patagonia to spend their fortunes to protect it. This film strikes so deeply into the heart of Patagonia’s wilderness, we come to feel at home there.

Yvon Chouinard, a humble yet strong hero for our Planet.

In 1968 Yvon Chouinard and Doug Tompkins set out to surf, ski and climb their way to Patagonia. The wild places they found later motivated them to protect the environment. Inspired by this journey, Jeff Johnson and Woodshed Films set sail on a voyage to South America to climb a mythical peak called Corcovado with Chouinard and Tompkins.
