Activist Majora Carter has been a leader in the environmental justice movement since starting the Sustainable South Bronx in 2001. I had the honor of meeting her and hearing about the nonprofit’s creation at a visit to their office last year. Her story, passionately recounted at TED, is one of such heart. The work of the SSBX, from green roofs to green-collar job training, comes straight from the passion she had for improving her community. It was just announced this past week, that Miquela Craytor, the former Deputy Executive Director, is stepping up to fill Majora’s shoes in the role of E.D. So what’s next for Majora Carter? When she’s not protesting China’s human rights abuses in Tibet, she’ll likely continue co-hosting The Green on the Sundance Channel with Simran Sethi. But I am most excited about the potential to replicate what’s happening in the Bronx in other cities. I cannot wait to see how Green for All, an organization she founded last year with Van Jones to help solve social inequality and environmental destruction, grows in 2008. And the press release announcing the change in SSBX leadership does hint at a growth in her consulting business.  Oh and did I mention that she decided to do something in her community while taking a walk with her dog? I love this reminder that big change often starts in life’s little moments of reflection.
