The Changing Tides of Fitness

It wasn’t too long ago the main focus of fitness was based on exercise, followed by healthy eating.

However, over the last year, there has been a shift in this phenonium and now includes wellness.

Think of life as a unique puzzle. Each puzzle piece represents an aspect of our lives – our behaviors, our thought processes, our beliefs, the important people in our lives – generally, how we view our world and how we see yourself.

When certain pieces are missing, this puzzle never becomes complete but instead, the whole image remains broken – your whole self-remains unbalanced and feels incomplete. This is how life is for many of our clients.

Our job as fitness leaders is not only to teach and demonstrate the importance of exercise to our clients but to also enforce, focus, and stress the importance of a healthy body and mind working together as one.

It’s one thing to help your clients get in better shape and eat healthier, but if their thoughts loom and gravitate towards negativity, are you really helping them become healthy overall?

Does health not include the mind and spirit of both our clients and ourselves?

Silent negative thoughts that linger inside speak loudly and if we do not address and allow these feelings to be expressed, how are we to silence them with positive reflection and positive growth?

It’s no wonder stress levels, anxiety, and depression is on a staggering rise worldwide! We as a society have forgotten how important it is to view each day with positive reflection. We are so focused on our daily tasks, deadlines, and meetings that lie ahead, that we have forgotten to slow down and stop, breath, and give credit to what we have accomplished and completed.

Gone are the days – or very few remain – where we end our day sitting at the kitchen table with family, talking about the great things that happened. Instead, everyone is so focused on electronics, how hard their day was, conflicts in their workplace, and/or grumble and complain about how they do not like their job.

Does this sound familiar. Perhaps this sounds like one of your own clients or even your own life.

Help your clients make the shift to wellness by allow them to vent when they are in your presence, but then help them reflect on something positive that happened. No matter how awful their day may appear, there is always one positive thing that did happen.

Get into a ritual – a routine – make it part of their program to focus and reflect on all the positive things in their life EVERYDAY! Make this also a routine for yourself.

For when you bring in positive thoughts and feelings, this is how the changing tides of fitness will occur.

Remember, the changing tides of fitness have shifted to include Health, Fitness (Exercise), and Wellness. You can’t create a balance of life without the other. It’s the only way the puzzle of life can be finished and completed.
