Chew in this bullshit:
Twenty years ago people I know tipped 15%-18% pre- tax at a full service restaurant.
Ten years ago my peers started tipping 20% post tax at full service restaurants.
Today we all feel compelled to tip 15%-20% at any place that you waited in line to order a to go item or a tray of food you will bus yourself?
And just for fun I am seeing places add in sustainability fees for employee health insurance and cost of living.
Tipping should end now for everyone’s sake.
For full service restaurants why not simply be like Danny Meyer, CEO of the Union Square Hospitality Group – Kill tipping and offer full transparency. To paraphrase Danny, tipping doesn’t generate better service that’s internal from the server. I agree.
For quick serve restaurants (bagels, burritos etc.), the social contract of awarding excellence with a tip is not relevant. aka, THERE IS NO FUCKING SERVICE, so please turn off the 15% button to check me out.
This economic trickery of false price advertising, false pretense social contracts and point-of-purchase awkwardness need to stop for the dignity of all.
Restaurateurs please stop propagating what are essentially car dealer pricing models that we’ve all accepted for far too long. Raise your prices to appropriates levels for your employees, trust them and train them to be excellent. Everyone will do the right thing over time.
