American Assassin movie synopsis
Mitch Rapp and his girlfriend Katrina Harper are vacationing in Ibiza, Spain. Moments after Katrina accepts Mitch’s proposal of marriage, terrorists land on the beach and begin attacking civilians with rifles. Amidst the carnage, Rapp frantically tried to find Katrina, but his fiancée was killed by the terrorists.
Eighteen months later, Rapp, now consumed by his desire for revenge, trained himself intensively in martial arts and marksmanship, and he frequented an internet message board where the terrorist responsible for his girlfriend’s murder questioned Rapp about aspects of Islam and jihad. After securing an invitation to meet him in person in Libya, Rapp prepares to take revenge on the man responsible for his girlfriend’s death, but before he can kill the terrorist, the cell is suddenly ambushed by US Special Forces. Upset over the perception that he was not seeking revenge, Rapp repeatedly stabbed the terrorist he was after, who had already died in the ambush, before being dragged out by US forces. At the CIA facility, Rapp underwent a 30-day debriefing before being offered the opportunity by CIA Deputy Director Irene Kennedy to join a black ops unit codenamed Orion. Its leader, Stan Hurley, was a former US Navy SEAL and Cold War veteran who trained Rapp and other potential recruits in asymmetric warfare.
Meanwhile, word came through intelligence channels that weapons-grade nuclear material had gone missing from a decommissioned Russian nuclear facility. The material in question appears to be aimed at Iranian hardliners, who are disillusioned with the Iranian government’s nuclear deal with the US. While verifying the sale of nuclear material in Poland, the plutonium was intercepted by a third party, who eliminated the seller before disappearing into the crowd. In Virginia, Hurley sees news reports about the incident in Poland and tentatively identifies the culprit as a former Navy SEAL and Orion member who is believed to have been killed in action and now goes by the codename “Ghost”. Hurley’s team was sent to Turkey to intercept the buyer Ghost was working for.
In Istanbul, Hurley’s team was identified, Victor was killed by Ghost, and the attempt to intercept the trigger device failed. Rapp chased the salesman to his apartment, and after killing the man, took his laptop. The information led the team to Rome, where Orion operatives identified the nuclear physicists needed to make nuclear material into a working nuclear weapon. While in Rome, Rapp discovers his coworker, Annika, as a foreign agent for Iran. He explained that he was working for a mainstream Iranian faction trying to stop hardliners from acquiring nuclear material. During a meeting between Hurley and an Iranian contact, Ghost ambushes them, killing the contact and capturing Hurley.
At the CIA safe house in Rome, Annika is being guarded by two Mossad agents when Rapp intercepts the car and frees her. Working together, they discover an underground base that Ghost is using to build a nuclear device. After infiltrating the tunnels, Rapp finds and frees a badly wounded Hurley. Annika is captured by Ghost and taken hostage, so she kills herself with Ghost’s weapon to give Rapp a chance to kill Ghost. However, Ghost escaped to the boat with the nuke. Based on the previous conversation, Hurley deduced that Ghost intended to carry out a kamikaze attack on the US Navy’s Sixth Fleet. Rapp pursued Ghost’s boat, while the Sixth Fleet, informed of the impending nuclear attack through CIA channels, prepared for the attack.
