“I Thought Love Would Feel Different”—The Expectations we Bring into Lo…
Hanna Zipes Basel is a seasoned couples therapist with over a decade of experience, having dedicated her career to helping individuals and couples since 2009. Hanna loves helping people build awareness of themselves because she believes so much of what we struggle with in relationships isn’t about the relationship itself—it’s about the patterns, wounds, and protective strategies we carry without realizing it. Hanna asserts that when we don’t understand our own inner world, we react instead of respond. We misinterpret our partner’s intentions. We get stuck in cycles that feel impossible to break. But when we learn to befriend our inner world—to recognize our fears, our triggers, our longings with compassion rather than judgment—we create space for something different. We stop running from our emotions or blaming them on others, and instead, we start making choices that lead to deeper, more secure connections. She maintains that self-awareness isn’t about fixing yourself; it’s about finally understanding yourself. And from that place, relationships become less about defense and more about connection.
