Hibernian fans paid their late chairman Ron Gordon a heartfelt tribute with an emotional rendition of ‘Sunshine on Leith’ before today’s Scottish Premiership clash against Rangers. Last month, the club’s controlling shareholder passed away after a long struggle against cancer.
In addition to singing the national anthem, fans donned special warm-up tshirts with “May the sunshine of Leith shine on you always” printed on them and donned black armbands throughout.
Last month, Easter Road club played their first game since Gordon’s passing. Fans paid a fitting tribute to him with an emotional rendition of their anthem – Sunshine on Leith.
Hibs players wore special warm-up tees with the message ‘May the sunshine of Leith, shine on you always Ron’ printed on the front and RIP Ronald J Gordon August 1954 – February 2023′ printed on the back. Additionally, they donned black armbands as a gesture of respect for Gordon.

Hibs manager Michael Beale appealed for Rangers supporters to show their respect in a dignified manner before Wednesday’s Premiership match at Easter Road. Unfortunately, those pleas fell on deaf ears as loud chanting and booing could be heard from the away end.
Hibs TV captured the moment in a video posted online which has now been viewed more than 33,000 times.
Hibs fans have created an emotional rendition of The Proclaimers’ classic ‘Sunshine on Leith’ for former chairman Ken Gordon, which also appears in the film Benny and Joon. The green and white faithful have adopted this song as their club’s unofficial anthem.
In 1988, The Proclaimers released Sunshine on Leith, which went platinum and produced three iconic songs: ‘I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)’ and the title track which quickly became a club anthem around the world.
The album became an instant classic in Scotland and Hibernian’s fans quickly adopted it as their unofficial anthem during their battle against then Hearts owner Wallace Mercer, who attempted to merge both clubs.

Willie McEwan, 68 years old and longtime supporter of the club’s youth section as a volunteer and now responsible for public awareness initiatives, spearheaded the campaign. According to him, the Auchtermuchty twins were engaged from day one and offered their assistance at key moments throughout its duration.

At the height of Gordon’s time as Hibs chairman, iconic photos from the stadium were projected onto large screens for an unforgettable performance.
The Proclaimers’ anthem can be an emotional roller coaster at any time, but when fans join forces it has an even more stirring impact. It’s one of the most beloved songs among football supporters worldwide.
Sunshine on Leith may be a somber song about loss, but it also serves as an impassioned call to action. Hibs fans raised their scarves in tribute to former chairman Ron Gordon before their Scottish Cup semi-final matchup against Rangers this evening.
The Proclaimers’ anthem is a poignant testament to the Hibs community and how its members stood strong against Hearts owner Willie Mercer to keep their club independent, even when it meant losing ground.
The Hands Off Hibs anthem was adopted as part of their Hands Off Mercer campaign and played an essential role in getting the message across. Lifelong Hibs supporter Willie McEwan, 68, recalls how this period brought out the significance of the song for them.
